The Pacific Forest Scorpion was completed on 3.27.2011. This illustration was a lot of fun, as I had encountered these scorpions in the wild a few times. The texture and anatomy of scorpions is very conducive to the illustration technique I use. The coloration of this specimen really appealed to me, with the dark blue, orange-ish and beige hues. The drawing is based on a photo by Jack Goldfarb.
The Pacific Forest Scorpion is a medium-sized arachnid found, as the name implies, in the areas of the Pacific Northwest in North America. They spend most of the day hiding under rocks, dead logs or burrows, as long as the space can provide moisture. They come out at night, feeding on small invertebrates, which they subdue with their venomous stinger and formidable pincers. Although this arthropod is poisonous, the venom isn't especially dangerous to humans, and if stung the effects are a painful wound, and perhaps a very, very bad headache.
