The Paris Peacock was completed on 4.25.2010. While I had never heard of this rare insect, a patron in Australia requested I draw one. Butterflies are another of my favorite subjects, although when they are mostly black like this one, they can be time consuming to create using stipple. I'd guess this one drawing has over 10,00 little black dots. The drawing is based on a photo by S.K. Lo.
The Paris Peacock Butterfly is a species of swallowtail butterfly native to the areas from South Asian, India to China, through Indonesia and into Australia. It is a member of the family Papilionidae. It has a wingspan of about 3.5 to 5 inches (9-13cm) It is considered a rare butterfly. There is little difference between the sexes, although the female tends to be somewhat more dull and pale in color.
