The Red-Eyed Vireo illustration was completed on 10.31.2011. After returning from a trip to San Diego, this illustration languished on my desk for a few days before I was able to complete it (it is part of a commission for a series of interpretive train signs in a Massachusetts park.) For some reason, it takes me a few days to get back into the groove of illustrating. But in the end I think the drawing turned out pretty well. It is based on a photo by
The Red-Eyed Vireo is a small songbird native to the open woodlands, forests and brushy areas throughout much of North America. While they might resemble a warbler, they are not closely related to them. While the bird is often hidden from view in trees and bushes, their song is often heard as what seems to be a ceaseless series of calls. This bird had more songs than any other bird species, with one being recorded as having about 20,000 in one day. Red-Eyed Vireos feed on insects such as caterpillars and aphids, which they deftly pluck from trees, bushes and other plants. They will also feed on berries and fruits, which sometimes bring them into parks and backyards. This is more common behavior as the breeding season approaches. Their numbers are generally stable across their very large range and they are not considered to be vulnerable or endangered.
