The Red-Legged Grasshopper was completed on 6.6.2011. When I start a drawing, I never really know how long it will take. Generally, I can get the inking version done in a day or two. I didn't think this subject would take that long, but four days were needed to complete the foundational ink drawing. I guess I underestimated the complexity of the anatomy of the grasshopper. In the end I think the drawing turned out pretty good. The drawing is based on a photo by David Marotta.
The Red-Legged Grasshopper is a medium-sized invertebrate (1/2 to 1-3/4 inches) and the most commonly found species in the eastern parts of North America. This species is considered a pest, damaging crops including grains, alfalfa, clover and soybeans, corn, beans, beets, cabbage, potatoes and tobacco. It is found in most parts of North America except for high mountain climates and the extreme cold parts of north. This member of the Acrididae family prefers environments of tall, grassy vegetation, open meadows, and reverted pastures and fields. The Red-Legged Grasshopper is mostly active during the day, and roosts on tops of grasses and weeds during the night.
