The Red Lionfish was probably the first drawing of mine that was more stipple than line. After years of drawing buildings, it was a little tough to transition from the world of architecture to natural and organic forms. The combination of line and stipple helped and it is a technique that I still use today. The line art version of this drawing was done in 1998 and the color was added in 2007.
Red Lionfish are also known as Firefish or Zebrafish. They are generally associated with coral reefs, but can also found in warm, marine water of the tropics. They tend to glide along the rocks and coral during the night and hide out in caves and crevices during the day. The fish is venomous and has poisonous spikes along its spine to ward off enemies. They are now found in the Atlantic and other oceans that they aren't native to and are considered an invasive species.
