The Red Panda Drawing is based on a photo I took in the Central Park zoo. It was completed in 2007, but then touched up in 2009 because the original was somewhat flat and uninteresting. I hope the adding of the sky and some leaves help to make it more appealing to the eye. UPDATE: As I was unhappy with the drawing and I was going to make a collage or endangered Chinese animals, the Red Panda drawing was completely redrawn based on a photo by tomosuki214 on Flickr.
The Red Panda - also called the Firefox, Red Cat-Bear or Lesser Panda - is native to the Himalayas in Bhutan as well as south-western China. They are a little bigger than a domestic house cat. They are critically endangered and it is believed there are less than 10,00 in the wild. The Red Panda is a herbivore and, like the Giant Panda, most of it's diet consists of bamboo shoots. Despite the name it is not closely related the the Panda however. The primary threats to red pandas are direct harvest from the wild, live or dead, competition with domestic livestock resulting in habitat degradation, and deforestation resulting in habitat loss or fragmentation.
