The Red-Winged Blackbird was completed on 3.3.2010. I saw some of these wonderful songbirds recently on a hike, and I couldn't believe I hadn't rendered one. Their distinctive calls remind me of taking walks with my family at the Wood Lake Nature Reserve in Richfield, Minnesota. The illustration is based on a photo by Frank Shufelt.
The Red-Winged Blackbird is a passerine bird and a member of the Icteridae family. It is common to most of North and Central America, and is frequently found in marshes (fresh and saltwater), wetlands, waterways and swamps near open grassy areas but are also encountered in prairies, meadows and farmland. Populations far to the north of their range frequently migrate south during winter, but in general the Red-Winged Blackbird is a non-migratory bird. The are omnivorous birds, feeding on insects, worms, snails and even small frogs as well as fruit, grains and seeds.
