The Reticulated Poison Dart Frog was completed on 7.4.2010. Back in 2004, I created a series of poison dart frog illustrations, which included dendrobates reticulatus. Over the years, I replaced them one by one with stronger images, the last of which is the Reticulated. The patterns on the lower parts of the body is was time consuming to draw (anything with a lot of black is) The drawing is based on a photo by Sebastian Irazuzta
Reticulated Poison Arrow Frogs live in the lush, tropical rainforests along the Amazon River and it's tributaries. Like other dendrobates, it secretes poison through glands in its skin. This poison is used to protect the frog from predators as well as fungus and bacterial infections. The bright colors serve as a warning to potential predators. These frogs are popular with pet owners. They are considered endangered in the wild due to climate change and habitat loss.
