The Rose-Breasted Grosbeak illustration was commissioned by Stackpole Books for Laura Erickson's 101 Ways to Help Birds. The line art version of the drawing was done in 2007, with the digital tinting added sometime in about 2009.
The Rose-Breated Grosbeak is a North American songbird that is part of the cardinal family. They live in deciduous woods, as well as orchards and groves. They are larger songbirds, generally about 7-8.5 inches long. They feed on seeds, berries and insects which they forage for in shrubs and trees. This songbirds breeding habitat is open deciduous woods across most of Canada and the northeastern USA. They migrate south into Central and South America during the winter. They have a very distinctive song, which is sometime said to sound like a "drunken robin."
