The Roseate Skimmer Dragonfly was completed on 10.8.2010. On my first trip to Hawaii I came across one of these beautiful insects. Although the one I saw was more pinkish than purple. The wings of dragonflies are a lot of fun to draw, but they have to be very close to being perfect, otherwise they look odd. The illustration is based on a photo by my Flicker friend Bob Barber.
The Roseate Skimmer Dragonfly is an insect native to the southern areas of North America, down through Central America and into South America, as far south as Chile. It has also been introduced into the Bahamas, Hawaii and the West Indies. The male's body is colored with a pinkish, purple or rose colored abdomen. The females are less colorful, with more of a dull brownish-orange color and a light stripe down the back. They tend to be found near water, usually still or quiet ponds, rain puddles and other forms of standing water.
