The Rough-Legged Hawk was completed on 11.19.2010. Hawk continue to be a great source of inspiration to me. I like to mix up the layout of the drawing (perched, in flight, landing, etc) so this time around, the Rough-Legged Hawk was rendered in flight. The drawing is based on a photo by Pat Gaines.
The Rough Legged Hawk - also called the Rough-Legged Buzzard in Europe - is a medium to large sized bird of prey. It is a member of the genus Buteo. It is one of only hawks of it's size to hover regularly. This is a true arctic species that exhibits a high degree of plumage variation, from individuals with extremely dark patterns to individuals with lighter colors, often termed “light morphs.” During the winder they're found in open fields, plains, marshes, and farmland. They tend to nest in the arctic areas.
