The Rufous Hummingbird was line art version was completed on 9.11.09. I realized I hadn't drawn a hummingbird for several years, so I chose the Rufous as the subject which is a native hummingbird to California and I see occasionally. The drawing is based on a photo by Bob Barber.
The Rufous Hummingbird is a smaller hummingbird of about 3 inches long. The females are slightly larger. They're native to North America breeding from California to Alaska. During winter they migrate to Mexico which can be a journey of over 2,000 miles. While generally found in the western parts of North America they've been know to stray to areas as far east as Florida. They are extremely hardy birds and can survive fairly cold conditions. Like most hummingbirds the Rufous feed on nectar from flowers using a long extendable tongue. They will also feed on insects that they will catch in flight.
