One of the best moments I have had while living in California is seeing Sea Otters off the coast in Big Sur. They're so much fun to watch floating on their backs in the kelp beds, then quickly turning tail and submerging to look for food. I hope we are able to stabilize their populations so future generations will be able to marvel at these amazing animals.
Sea Otters are the largest member of the family Mustelidae. They inhabit temperate coastal waters with rocky or soft sediment ocean bottoms less than a mile from shore. They are an integral part of the kelp forest ecosystem. Their fur is brown with lighter brown fur covering their heads. Sea Otter fur is the densest of all mammals, with about 100,000 hairs per square inch.
