The Sergeant Major fish was completed in 2009 (although the initial ink drawing was completed in the previous year.) It was commissioned by the Buccoo Reef Trust. This was the first coral reef fish I had illustrated. If you have a suggest for another species, please send me an email.
The Sergeant Major, also called the Pintano, is a large damselfish of the family Pomacentridae. It grow to about 6 inches long (15cm) This is a reef fish, native to the tropical waters of the Atlantic Ocean. In the coral reefs, these fish feed on crustaceans and other invertebrates, zooplankton, smaller fish, and different types of algae. They are also very popular aquarium fish, although because they are very territorial they can pose problems if not monitored. The Sergeant Major fish gets its name from the brightly striped sides, which are reminiscent of the insignia of the military rank of Sergeant Major.
