The Serval was completed on 2/28/2009. I had just seen a documentary on the Drakensberg Mountains in South Africa that had a segment on servals - which reminded me I wanted to draw one. These are very cool little wildcats - at least little by African standards. Like all big cats they have a simply beautiful coat along with the fantastically large ears. I really enjoyed illustrating this fascinating cat.
The serval is a medium-sized wildcat that lives primarily in the African savannah but it can also be found in mountainous areas as well. It is closely related to the African Golden Cat and the Caracal. They are about 34 inches long plus about 16 inches of tail. They range in weight from about 25-50 pounds with the males being slightly larger. The Serval is highly specialized for catching rodents, it is an opportunistic predator whose diet also includes hares, birds, reptiles, insects, fish, and amphibians. Unlike many big cats in the world they are not considered endangered.
