The Shamrock Orb Weaver Spider was completed on 4/27/2009. I took some photos and did some sketches of this amazing spider one day when I was hiking out at Point Reyes National Seashore. I had for forgotten about them until I came across them recently. I decided to work up a full drawing of this beautiful arachnid. The background is an experiment of sorts, as I thought with a detailed leafy background the delicate threads of silk might get lost.
Orb weavers are a large family of spiders numbering over 2,800 species and 160 genera. They can be found in may different areas of the world and in varied environments: forests, fields, gardens and backyards. These spiders build spiral shaped webs, which is where the common name is taken from although not all spiders from this genus build webs. Like other spiders orb weavers have eight eyes with hairy or spiny legs. They are not poisonous or dangerous to humans, and they serve a positive function in urban areas controlling pests.
