The Short-Eared Owl was completed on 10.5.2010. I love owls, and enjoy rendering them. What I think really works in this image is the layering of the feathers on the body. The shapes and shadows really help to define the birds anatomy. I also like the intelligent expressions that owl inevitably have. The drawing is based on a photo by the talented wildlife photographer Nancy J Wagner
The Short-Eared Owl is a member of the Strigidae family, which are typical owls. Their range is huge, encompassing more most of the world, save for Australia and Antarctica. Inike other owls, Asio flammeus will begin hunting during daylight or early evening, with the hunts going one into the night. They look for prey in open fields, marshlands, meadows and grasslands, feeding on small rodents like mice, rats and voles. It will also occasionally take insects like moths as part of its diet, which it will pluck out of the air. While their numbers are declining in some areas, in general their populations are considered stable.
