The Somali Wild Donkey was completed on 5.31.2012. I have become Facebook friends with the chairwoman and research director of the Association of Goviin Khulan, which is an organization that is involved in protecting the endangered Mongolian Khulan and its habitat. There are several wild horses in the world, and most of them are endangered or otherwise threatened. I hope to use this image to help raise awareness and fund for this group (25% of all sales will be donated to them)
The Somali Wild Donkey is a sub-species of the African Wild Donkey. It is a critically endangered equine, and is found in only very remote areas of the Southern Red Sea region of Eritrea, the Afar Region of Ethiopia. It is not known for certain, but there may be some small population still in Somalia. It is believed that there are less than 1,000 in the wild. Hunting, interbreeding with domestic animals and decreasing access to food and water in a very harsh climate has pushed this animal to the brink of extinction. There are roughly 200 animals in captivity around the world and active breeding programs are ongoing.
