The Southern Leopard Frog was completed on April 20th, 2009. Generally, frogs are more fun than challenging to draw. This frogs was an exception with the varied spotted pattern and overlapping splotches of color. In the end the results are pretty strong I think. The drawing feels very three-dimensional to me. The drawing is based on a photo by Tal Danan.
The Southern Leopard Frog is a mostly aquatic amphibian found in the south-eastern third of the United States. This true frog prefers shallow lakes, ponds, slow moving streams which have enough vegetation to provide adequate shelter and camouflage. The generally feed on insects and earthworms. They are medium-sized frogs growing to about 3.5 inches in length. Leopard frogs are excellent jumpers and can often avoid predation by leaping into the water and submerging until the danger has passed. There are two recognized subspecies: The Southern Leopard Frog and the Florida Leopard Frog.
