The Southern Stingray was completed on 1.10.10. Standing in ankle deep water on an island in Costa Rica I was startled to feel something bump into my leg. That something was a stingray and there was dozens of the patrolling the waters around me. That was several years ago, but I had always meant to draw one. This image is based on a photo by Venson Kuckipudi.
Southern Stingrays are found in the tropical and sub-tropical waters of the southern Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. It is most abundant near Florida and the Bahamas. They generally are about six feet long. These rays feeds primarily at night on on small bivalves, worms, crustaceans and small fish. They prefer shallow sandy bottoms, seagrass beds, lagoons and reefs. If stepped on by a diver or attacked by its natural predator the hammerhead shark, it will sting over its head like a scorpion.
