The Spanish Shawl Nudibranch was completed on 12.3.10. These animals are fairly new to me, so I have a lot to learn about them. I've come across a couple in tidal pools, and hopefully will find them when I go diving in the kelp forests this year. Their colors are amazing and I'll probably add more to the image library fairly soon. The drawing is based on a photo by Gary McDonald.
The Spanish Shawl is a species of aeolid nudibranch or sea slug. This colorful sea slug is commonly found in the kelp forests of the Pacific Ocean from the Galapagos Islands to British Columbia in Canada, where is feeds on small coral polyps. When threatened Flabellina iodinea can gracefully move away by flexing their body strongly and pushing off from the substrate and float away in the water.
