Artist's notes:

The Spotted Turtle was completed on 6.11.09. I had been meaning to draw one of these handsome reptiles for some time. I visited the Oakland Zoo one morning and made some photos studies of their resident Spotted Turtles that live in the new reptile and amphibian house. Luckily they were both basking out on logs which gave me a good opportunity to study them

Information about the Spotted Turtle:

The Spotted Turtle is a small aquatic reptile found in the eastern parts of North America, generally in the Great Lakes region and the Eastern Seaboard. The spots can vary from many hundreds to some animals with other a few. Spotted Turtles feed on small fish, crustaceans and snails. They are often kept as pets, but many states now there are laws that prohibit this as the animal is considered endangered or vulnerable in many states. These reptiles prefer to live in areas such as marshes, soggy pastures, bogs, swamps, woodland streams and even drainage ditches.
