The Spring Peeper was completed on 12.2.10. I recall trying to locate these little frogs in northern Minnesota. I came to a clearing with a large puddle in it with dozens - perhaps hundreds on them in it. But as I got closer, the frogs fell silent. Rummaging around in the puddle I didn't find a one. The drawing is based on a photo by Rob Denton.
The Spring Peeper - sometimes called 'pinkletinks' is a small amphibian native to North America. They have a body length between 1-1.5 inches (25-38 mm) These frogs feed on small insects such as ants, flies and spiders. As their name implies, the Spring Peeper has a high-pitched call similar to that of a newly born chicken, only much louder and rising slightly in tone. They can be tan or gray or dark brown, but they all have a dark "X" on their backs. They're heard earlier in spring not long after the ice melts in the forests and are among the first frogs to call in the spring.
