The Sumatran Orangutan was completed on 11/15/2008. I originally wanted to draw a female, but when I started doing some research the bizarre shape of the male's face made for a more interesting drawing. This is the 2nd primate I've drawn(the other was a Mountain Gorilla) and I'm still learning how to render fur. Overall I think the drawing is fine, but for some reason the Great Apes are really challenging me and pushing me out of my comfort zone.
The Sumatran Orangutan is one of two species of orangutan (The other being the Bornean.)The Sumatran Orangutan is the smaller of the two. These apes grow to about 4.5 feet tall and weigh 200 pounds, with the females being slightly smaller. Like many of the Great Apes both species of orangutan are critically endangered. They are threatened by habitat loss and poaching.
