A sketch of the Horned Lizard was done back in 2003, but the final wasn't completed until 2008. This drawing is based on a photo by wildlife photographer Greg Lasley. I was sad to learn, from a customer who ordered a print and lived in an area they used to be common, told me their numbers in the wild are dwindling due in large part of the introduction of the non-native fire ants who destroy the egg clutches.
Texas Horned Lizards - also called a ‘horny toad’ - live mainly in sandy areas where it often inhabits abandoned animal burrows. The habitat of this lizard is usually in close proximity to the nests of harvester ants. The Texas Horned Lizard has the ability to squirt an aimed stream of blood from the corners of the eyes. It is the official reptile of the state of Texas.
