The Thorny Seahorse was one of a three part series of seahorses drawn in 2004. The color was added in 2007. In a moment of inspiration, I went back and added color to the Common Seahorse and Dwarf Seahorse ink illustrations. I have plans to add a Pot-Bellied Seahorse to the image library at some point soon.
The Thorny Seahorse belongs to the order of Syngnathiformes and class Actinopterygii which are the 'ray-finned fishes.' They are native to the south seas from Japan and Micronesia south to the waters surrounding Australia. They are found in shallow areas around sheltered reefs, or in clumps of algae and beds of seagrass. Like all seahorses the male carry the eggs in a brood patch. They grow to about 7 inches long.
