The Three-Toed Box Turtle is a subspecies of Terrapene carolina. This species is a group of hinge-shelled terrestrial turtles commonly known as box turtles. This box turtle gets its name from the number of toes on the hind feet. It is an average sized turtle, with a domed shell that typically grows to 4.5-5 inches. These reptiles can be found from eastern Texas to the northern edge of the Florida panhandle. They are very popular in the pet trade. It is the official state reptile of Missouri.
