This Waxy Monkey Tree Frog was completed on 5.4.2011. Again and again I return to my favorite subject: The Frog. With some 4,700+ species on the planet, it seems unlikely I'm going to be able to complete a drawing of more than 1-2% of them in my lifetime. Which is shame, but then again with countless millions of animals on the planet, I'm glad to have drawing over 50 species. The drawing is based on a photo by Todd Pierson.
The Tiger-Legged Monkey Frog is found in the lush tropical forests of South America. Like many tropical frogs it is nocturnal. The males spends the nights perched on a branch calling out for a mate, and both sexes hunt for prey in the canopy of the rainforest. Phyllomedusa hypochondrialis is a very adaptable species, and is found in urban and rural areas as well as it's native forests. While the population is considered stable, it faces threats from pollution, climate change and loss of habitat due to deforestation. It does well in captivity and is frequently kept as a pet.
