Artist's notes:

The Timber or Canebrake Rattlesnake was completed on 3.7.2012. This snake, as with the others, posed a pretty massive challenge to me. The pattern of the scales, that form crisscross patterns across the body that, if you make a mistake, looks wrong and can make the entire drawing collapse. I paid special attention to the patterns and I hope this makes for a strong drawing. This snake is special, as it's native to my home state of Minnesota. The illustration is based on a photo by Pierson Hill.

Information about the Timber or Canebrake Rattlesnake:

The Timber Rattlesnake - also called the Canebrake or Banded Rattlesnake - is a species of pitviper native to the deciduous forests of the eastern United States from southern Minnesota and southern New Hampshire, south to east Texas and north Florida. It is a larger snake, with the size being on average about 35.8-59.8 inches (91–152 centimeters) They are poisonous and bites can be fatal if not treated. The snake usually resides in rough terrain, boulder piles and other out of the way areas so encounters with humans are not common. The snake feeds on small mammals such as mice and rats, but will also eat reptiles, amphibians and other smaller snakes too. During the winter months it will hibernate in dens or rock crevices, sometimes with other snakes. The Timber Rattlesnake is the state reptile of West Virginia.
