The Tomato Frog was completed on 5.26.09. I had just seen some of these gorgeous frogs at the new California Academy of Sciences (I have seen them there several times since). The mottled red and yellow skin was a challenge but I think it looks good. The drawing is based on a photo by Tim Thomas.
Tomato frogs come from Madagascar. The name is based on the fact that this amphibian is bright red and roundish. If threatened a Tomato frog will puff up it's body making it appear larger than it really is. The frog can also secrete a thick substance through it's skin that will cause any predator's mouth and eyes to be irritated. The Tomato Frog is a very popular animal to keep for a pet. Due to destruction of it's native habitat and the overall decline of amphibian species worldwide it is considered endangered.
