The Tricolored Heron drawing was completed on 7.9.2010. The coloration of these birds is simply extraordinary! When I first saw them while on vacation in Florida, I knew that I should draw one. I added this shorebird to a collection of animals I felt were some of the most beautiful and remarkable on the planet. The illustration is based on a photo by noted wildlife photographer David Cree.
This small to medium-sized wading or shorebird, formerly known as the Louisiana Heron, is native to the sub-tropical swamps, marshes, of the USA and northern Mexico south through Central America and the Caribbean to central Brazil and Peru. This bird is named for its three main colors: bluish-gray, purple and white, which become more colorful as the breeding season begins. Like other herons, it feeds on small crustaceans, fish, reptiles and amphibians it stalks along the shallow waters of swamps, coastal ponds, marshes, mudflats and slow moving streams.
