The Tule Elk was completed on 10/27/2008. I'd been meaning to draw an elk for some time, and as I live in the Bay Area - and get out to Point Reyes when I can - I thought the subspecies Tule Elk would be appropriate. There a few sights in the natural world more gorgeous and breathtaking than a heard of Tule Elk in the mist, high up above on the hills over the Pacific ocean in Point Reyes National Seashore. I hope this drawing at least captures a small amount of that beauty. This drawing is based on a photo by Ivan Tong.
The Elk - also known as the Wapiti - are one of the largest species of deer in the world. They are also among the largest mammals in North America. Elk live in forest and forest edge habitats where they feed on grasses, leaves, bark and plants. Tule Elk disappeared from much of their original range, but thanks to reintroduction projects they have now re-established themselves in some of these areas. There are four living subspecies of elk in North America, with two now extinct.
