The Violet-Green Swallow was supposed to be part of a field guide for a local hotel in the Reno/Lake Tahoe area. Unfortunately, it was shelved and now it's publication is in doubt. Regardless, until this commission I was unfamiliar with this lovely bird. It was a real pleasure to draw. UPDATE: Last fall the design firm commissioned a few more illustrations relative to the project, so with any luck it might move forward.
The Violet-Green Swallow is a small swallow that is part of the genus Techycineta. They breed in semi-open areas in the Western North America all the way from Alaska to Mexico. They winter in Central and South America, migrating in large flocks. These attractively colored songbird usually nest in cavities in a tree or rock crevice or other protective area where the next can remain dry and the chick protected. Occasionally, several birds will cluster their nests forming small colonies. They feed mostly on small flying insects like mosquitoes, butterflies, mayflies and moths.
