The Weedy Sea Dragon was completed on 2.2.42011. Ever since completing a Leafy Sea Dragon several years ago, I've been meaning to add a Weedy to the image library. They have a tank of these interesting fish at the California Academy, and I always make a point to check it out when I'm there. The drawing is based on a photo by
The Weedy Sea Dragon is an ocean fish related to the seahorse. It is the only member of the genus Phyllopteryx. This fish is found in the coastal waters of Australia, usually in and around reefs. The name comes from the camouflage of their bodies which mimic the plants of the seabeds where they live. They are about 17 inches long (45 cm) Weedy Sea Dragons, like seahorses, are the only know animals in which the male carries the eggs. However, the sea dragon lacks the prehensile tail the seahorse has. Sea dragons feed on small mysid shrimp called 'sea-lice', plankton and tiny fish. They don't possess teeth so they eat by sucking in small amounts of water along with their prey.
