The line art illustration of the Western Diamondback Rattlesnake was completed in 2004 and the digital tinting was added in 2007. It is based on a photo by the The Manzanita Project. The image was re-touched in 2009.
The Western Diamondback Rattlesnake is a venomous pit viper ranging from south central to southwestern North America. It inhabits many different environments including flat coastal plains to steep rocky canyons and arid deserts and hillsides of the southwestern United States and Mexico. Like all pit vipers it is venomous, although this species' venom is less powerful than some of their relatives. Adults generally grow to about four feet in length.
