The Western Fence Lizard was completed on 10.13.2010. I'm slowly working my way through the lizards native to my adopted state of California. I was overdue to draw this reptile, who is perhaps encountered more than any other. The drawing is based on a photo by David Hoffman.
The Western Fence Lizard is a reptile of genus of Sceloporus or 'spiny lizards'. They grow to about 8.5 inches (21 cm) Most adults develop a distinctive blue belly, although the overall coloration of the lizard can vary, from dark morphs to light, sand and/or gray colored individuals, with yellow, blue and green splotches. The Western Fence Lizard is distributed throughout eastern Oregon, southwest Idaho, all of Nevada, western Utah, Southern California, and northwestern Baja California. They have adapted to a variety of environments, from coastal range scrublands, foothills, chaparral and even urban areas if the conditions are right.
