The Western Green Toad was completed on 11.09.10. I love drawing amphibians, and toads especially. There are few actual green toads (most are more muted, drabby earth tones) so I was happy to create an illustration of this beautiful green species! The drawing is based on a photo by Alice Abela.
The Western Green Toad - Anaxyrus debilis, also classified as Bufo debilis, is a species of amphibian native to the arid areas of the Southwestern North America, specifically the states of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas and Texas, as well as in northern Mexico. They are also popular pets and do well in captivity. They are not a large toad, growing to 2 inches in length. They're active only at night, and can be found during and immediately after periods of heavy rainfall, which is uncommon because their habitat is semi-arid and often very dry. Breeding occurs whenever conditions are favorable (except in winter) Males will call to the females from a pool of water suitable for laying eggs in.
