The Western Toad was completed on 9.15.10. Toads are so cool, and the the texture of their skin is very conducive to the techniques use to create my illustrations (ink drawing that is then tinted digitally using Photoshop.) The image is based on a photograph by Alice Abela.
The Western Toad - also called the Boreal Toad - is a large amphibian native to the western parts of North America, from as far north as Alaska to well into the Baja Peninsula in Mexico. Bufo boreas are very widespread throughout the mountainous areas of northwestern North America, ranging from sea level to elevations near or above regional treeline. They are known for their prodigious breeding, and in some areas will nearly turn creeks and streams black with the multitudes of tadpoles. But very few make it to full grown adults. The Western Toad feeds on flying insects like bees and dragonflies, beetles, ants, arachnids and other invertebrates. They are opportunistic feeder and will eat nearly anything that seems like food and will fit in their mouths.
