The Whooping Crane was originally drawn in 2005 for Laura Erickson's excellent and informative book 101 Ways to Help Birds. Just last month I saw my first Whooping Crane in the wild just outside of Houston, Texas. The only other crane I have seen in the wild was a Sandhill Crane.
The Whooping Crane is the tallest North American bird standing nearly 5 feet tall and has an enormous wingspan of 7.5 feet. It, along with the Sandhill Crane, are the only two species of cranes in North America. The cranes forage while walking in shallow water or in fields, sometimes probing with their bills. They are omnivorous and feeds on fish, amphibians, snails, berries and aquatic plants, snakes and crustaceans. on It is considered endangered and had been eliminated from much of it's original range. Several conservation groups are working to preserve this majestic bird and return it to areas it once lived.
