The line art drawing of the Wood Duck was commissioned by Stackpole Books for Laura Erickson's '101 Ways to Help Birds.' I added the digital tinting in 2007. Wood Ducks are one of my favorite of waterfowl, so I was very happy when I was commissioned to draw one.
The Wood Duck is a medium-sized perching duck. They grow to about 19 inches long and a wingspan of around 30 inches. The adult male has striking coloration whereas as in most ducks the female's coloration is more drab. The range of the Wood duck is from central North America to the east coast as well the Pacific coast from British Columbia to northern Mexico. Due to overhunting the Wood Duck was almost exterminated in the late 1800s, but thanks to the passing of laws to protect them the Wood Duck is the most common waterfowl species breeding in the US. It is the official waterfowl of the state of Mississippi.
